Research

MindExpo

Included in the curriculum is a research opportunity that begins in the junior year with the preparation of a research proposal and selection of a mentor. The project is then completed during the following two semesters of the senior year and culminates in a presentation at Doane MindExpo. Students participate in paid summer research experiences, which support students researching with faculty.

Senior Capstone Project

Seniors may choose from one of the following options for their capstone project.

  • Practice-Based Learning (PBL) - Provides internship and research opportunities to gain experience, professional contact, and a potential future employer. Students work with the College to Career Center and Environmental and Earth Sciences faculty to arrange the internship.
  • Service Learning Internship - Service learning is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities (National Service Learning Clearinghouse). Students work with the College to Career Center and Environmental and Earth Sciences faculty to arrange the internship.
  • Research Option - Provides the opportunity to work with a Doane faculty member on a research project. Facilities include the Lied Science and Mathematics Building.
Emphasis Areas
  • Environmental Systems
  • Agriscience Systems
  • Human Dimensions

Wildlife Coloring Book

Doane and the Crete community created a Wildlife Coloring Book that features Nebraska wildlife. This project is a result of collaboration, providing an opportunity for families and friends to head outdoors and learn about the wildlife illustrated in the coloring book. It also serves as a cultural and learning connection between people and nature. Doane students and faculty in the Art and Graphic Design classes prepared the artwork and design, while the Spanish class developed the translations.

Helpful Links

Whether you’re ready to apply or still testing the waters with a tour, we’re here for you. Here are some helpful links to assist you on your journey.

Natural Resources and Environmental Science (NRES) students are required to take a variety of courses, and have many experiences over a range of fields such as science, environmental literature, economics and policy. NRES students participate outdoor experiences that might include field trips to Rocky Mountain National Park, camping and kayaking on the Niobrara River and watching the spring crane migration from a blind on the Platte River. Career-oriented opportunities include setting up a Test Your Well event providing free nitrate testing of well water, field trips to a waste water treatment plant and a sanitary landfill and hands-on alternative energy activities as well as capstone experiences in environmental science, human dimensions and agriculture.

Natural Resources and Environmental Science students learn the importance of and our reliance on the environment, agriculture and natural resources, as they look for creative ways to protect our world. In the environmental policy and sustainability class, students investigate the attitudes of various religions and cultures, and their connections to one another, toward nature and our use of natural resources. This is done through the class discussion, role playing and double-entry journaling.

Natural Resources and Environmental Science students can competently communicate with the public and others in their field on a variety of environmental subjects. This includes subjects across the natural and social sciences, business, and the humanities and can communicate the environmental interrelationships across those fields. With our world's increasing emphasis on the environment, agriculture and natural resources, there’s an increasing demand for creative problem-solvers in various industries such as environmental, energy, wildlife, agriculture and more.
